UBE and AEROX innovates for optimizing efficiency of wind energy
The company UBE Corporation Europe located in Castellón and AEROX Advanced Polymers located in Valencia (Spain) through its parent company QMC carried out a project which will improve the operating conditions of wind turbines, increasing their efficiency and durability, according to the Energy Cluster, which is also involved in this initiative.
The aim of the proposal is to develop a system which reproduces the actual conditions of a wind turbine blade, which will evaluate the effects of erosion on the leading edge of the blade which is by far the area that suffers all the environmental elements during its operation. The ultimate goal is to develop a solution that "maximize resistance" and is "compatible" with current manufacturing processes.
This project is aligned with the cluster´s strategy of R & D which includes the promotion of renewable energy, the use of wind energy and energy efficiency, it has been selected for its high innovative component, program for Innovative Business Groups (AEI) of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism and co-financed by the ERDF.
This technology will increase "significantly" not only the life of the wind turbines, but also the duration of the maximum efficiency of them, as well as reduce the maintenance costs.
At present, there is only a system in the market for measuring the effects of erosion on turbine blades, sold by a Danish company, so that this development represents an "important innovation" at international level on which the major wind turbine manufacturer have shown a huge interest.
In one hand, the multinational Japanese company located in Castellón UBE Corporation Europe, leader worldwide in manufacturing policarbonatodiol (PCD) contributes its knowledge in the synthesis and production of PCD, its ability to characterize the formulations and support the selection of these products. UBE holds great experience in this kind of projects where the properties of these high performance polymers can be applied.
In the other hand, AEROX with a high degree of specialization in based polymer material product on poliureas develop a system and application of the new material that will gain efficiency by reducing the manufacturing time.
The program to support Innovative Business Groups MINETUR will be published in June, with a total budget of 11 million, its main purpose is to promote innovative projects offered grants repayable in business clusters recognized by the ministry.
